The Labor government’s plan to allow foreign citizens with permanent residency serve in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is a “half-baked policy” which lacks “definite detail”, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has claimed.

'I think this is a government that is losing its way': Peter Dutton torches Labor's plan to allow foreign citizens into the ADF

The plan drew the ire of Mr Dutton who criticised the move as unprepared and raised concerns about its lack of detail. “I think this is a government that is losing its way. I think the Australian public can attest to that.” Mr Hastie said while the ADF was “about 5000 people short of its full fighting force”, the shortage of army personnel would only “get worse over the next 15 years”.

Earlier on Tuesday, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh said once people had served in the ADF for 90 days they would be eligible for Australian citizenship, however Mr Hastie questioned how this would operate. Former ADF officer and shadow assistant minster for defence Phillip Thompson said the Labor government needed to connect with the current army personnel.
