Australia voting in favour of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations vote could encourage October 7-inspired terrorists and would be the “world’s worst signal that you could possibly send”, Shadow Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham has warned.
Labor risks ‘incentivising' October 7-inspired terror attacks if it backs UN motion to admit Palestine as a full member: Birmingham
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is among the Labor politicians to support the push, declaring on Thursday “we support a two-state solution and support rhetorical positions that are consistent with that”. Speaking to Sky News AM Agenda host Laura Jayes on Friday morning, Mr Birmingham said the means by which a two-state solution was achieved was most important.“Because how you get to a two-state solution matters and whether or not a motion like this actually creates the right right incentives to get there, or creates the incentive for Hamas and others to see that the tactics of October 7 work and therefore continue an entrenched form of terrorist activity,” the Senator replied.
“You need to see pressure put on Hamas for those hostages to be released in the short term and for proper negotiations to be made possible over the medium to longer term,” he said. "We will look at what the actual meaning the resolution is, we will look at and we are focused on the situation on the ground, we want a humanitarian ceasefire, we want the release of hostages, we want to increase humanitarian aid."
"It's not a question of if we will recognise a Palestinian state, it is a question of when," she said.
