Hasta ahora, la vacuna fabricada por Pfizer y su socio alemán BioNTech era la única opción para niños en América del Norte y Europa.La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de Estados Unidos estudia la autorización de la vacuna de Moderna para menores de 18 años.
Dada la escasez global de vacunas, buena parte del mundo tiene problemas para inmunizar a los adultos. Organismos como la Organización Mundial de la Salud exhortan a los países ricos a donar dosis al mundo en desarrollo —donde menos del 2% de la población está vacunada— en lugar de inocular a sectores jóvenes, menos vulnerables, de la población.
