La Playa Fresh Seafood is a new Mexican-style seafood restaurant in Gordon Square. Aside from a seafood-heavy menu, La Playa also offers beachy drinks and a vacation-like vibe.

It’s not by accident — both restaurants were created by local restauranteur Rafael Ayala. Ayala and his family are also known for starting the local Tres Potrillos restaurant chain.

There are endless ways to enjoy fresh fish at La Playa, all utilizing the cooking techniques found in Puerto Vallarta. The menu features plenty of raw or cold seafood options, like ceviche, aguachile and even a seafood tower. The cooked menu options are just as expansive, including dishes like pan-seared tuna steak, stuffed coconut shrimp, and whole lobster grilled with garlic butter.

“When you come in, you’re going to notice the difference,” he said of the food in comparison to other restaurants. The cocktail list reads like that of a beach bar. Margaritas have their place, especially the signature soft-serve margarita with rotating flavors, but they don’t overwhelm the cocktail menu. The offerings feature other refreshing sips from mojitos to micheladas, all made with real ingredients that don’t come from a pre-mixed bottle.
