County Board Supervisor Janice Hahn, who chairs Metro's Board of Directors, initiated the no-fare policy in response to multiple fires that erupted on January 7th.
Thousands of residents in the Palisades, Altadena, and surrounding areas of Los Angeles County were forced to evacuate their homes due to the blazes. \On Thursday, the Board of Directors approved an expansion of the LIFE program, an initiative designed to offer free and reduced-fare service to eligible individuals. Metro anticipates modifying the program's eligibility criteria for at least six months. Residents displaced by the fires who enroll will receive 20 complimentary rides each month or a discounted pass on another participating transit agency. Metro staff will actively engage in outreach efforts to ensure that displaced residents and Metro employees can sign up for the reduced-fare program. \Applications and pre-loaded TAP cards will be available at various resource centers throughout Los Angeles County. These include Pasadena City College’s FEMA Recovery Center on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., UCLA Research Park West, at 10850 W. Pico Blvd., from Saturday to February 1st from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Kaiser Permanente Pasadena Headquarters, located at 393 E. Walnut St., from Monday to February 1st from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fire survivors can also apply online and receive a 30-day digital pass, along with a pre-loaded TAP card mailed to them.
