The city of Los Angeles is implementing new safety measures to improve the experience for Metro riders.

The city of Los Angeles is implementing new safety measures to improve the experience for Metro riders. These changes include the reintroduction of the "tap to exit" program and the installation of taller fare gates at key stations.

Metro is launching the tap-to-exit program at the North Hollywood and Union stations. This initiative requires passengers to tap their fare cards not only when entering but also when exiting the transit system. The goal is to ensure that all riders pay their fare, whether upon entry or exit, thereby enhancing safety and security.Additionally, new ceiling-to-floor paddle-style fare gates have been installed. These gates are designed to prevent fare evasion by making it impossible to hop over them. They also incorporate technology to prevent piggybacking, ensuring that each rider taps their card individually. "The number one goal is obviously access control, ensuring that everybody that's coming into the stations taps and is able to pay their fare before they come in," explained Carlos Rico, who oversees the Department of Public Safety.SUGGESTED COVERAGE:
