Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass traveled to Africa on Tuesday as part of a taxpayer-funded delegation to attend the inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as Ghana’s president. Her trip coincided with wildfires raging in Los Angeles , forcing thousands to evacuate. Shalanda D. Young, director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, led the delegation to Accra, Ghana’s capital, which also included Virginia E. Palmer, the U.S. ambassador to Ghana, and Frances Z.
Brown, special assistant to the president and the National Security Council’s senior director for African affairs. Bass’s absence drew criticism as a fast-burning wildfire fueled by strong winds threatened homes and the local public school in Pacific Palisades, forcing an evacuation. California deployed over 1,400 firefighters to battle the blazes. While officials didn't estimate the damage to structures in the Pacific Palisades wildfire, they reported 30,000 residents under evacuation orders and over 13,000 structures at risk. Social media users expressed frustration over Bass's overseas trip during the crisis. Santa Ana winds exceeding 60 mph, with gusts reaching up to 100 mph, intensified the wildfire threat.
