She won the section D-IV title by nearly a minute and has competed on the Woodward Park course this season and learned a lesson
But you’d have to admit that it certainly wouldn’t hurt having both parents being former University of Arkansas runners if you were to ponder the possible connection to the cross country success of La Jolla High freshman Chiara Dailey.
Oh, one of those runners, who started when she was barely able to walk and entered high school as a wunderkind?“I never ran before last summer, soccer was my sport,” said Dailey, who will go out for the school soccer team after the state meet. “I knew I was fast in soccer. I always wanted to run but I liked playing soccer, too.”That means most of the other runners don’t really know for sure how she’ll perform in the high-intensity state championships.
“But those are outstanding runners and if you’re not close, you can’t make up much ground. I think she’s learned now to run with the pack but to be yourself.”“She can win,” said Benham, quickly adding, “but the others are tough, too. I know after the Clovis race she was glad she’d run because now she’s familiar with the course.”“I let the pack get away from me,” she said. “It was my inexperience.
At the section championships she bolted to the front and never looked back, using her speed to win over teammate Kirra Fisk in the second-fastest time of the day, 17:14.6.
