Los Angeles County board votes to provide employer-paid healthcare benefits to 2,000 contracted workers.

In a move applauded by service workers, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, April 4 agreed that contracted workers at four county hospitals will be provided fully-paid healthcare benefits.

LA County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis speak in support of healthcare for contracted essential workers to have 100% employer paid health insurance from county hospitals as SEIU United Service Workers West and their supporters rally in Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. The workers told the supervisors they can’t afford private health insurance, or even federal Obamacare insurance, so they go without. Instead, they use county emergency and urgent-care facilities.

Anthony Thomas, a security guard at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said he can’t afford to pay $212 a week for insurance. He said he was speaking for all 2,000 contracted hospital service workers, who he described as assets who are committed to county services. L.A. County CEO Fesia Davenport, along with the Department of Health Services , will develop and institute contracts with providers to include healthcare benefits for employees who work 30 hours or more per week. The contracts will be ready “as soon as practicable” but not later than Dec. 31, according to the motion.

Both Hahn and First District Supervisor Hilda Solis said the action was part of a broader movement to meet the needs of service workers, pointing toseeking better pay and healthcare.
