It’s not just too many cats and dogs — there’s also a shortage of veterinary professionals at the county’s shelters, says Supervisor Kathryn Barger.
Supervisor Kathryn Barger holds a puppy up for adoption prior to a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors public hearing on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, in downtown Los Angeles. Proclaiming October as “Adopt a Shelter Dog Month” in Los Angeles County, the Board of Supervisors is calling for amplified efforts today to address overcrowding in animal shelters.
According to Barger, out of 45 contract cities DACC serves, only 27 have enacted spay-and-neuter policies, 28 have adopted mandatory microchipping and only 25 provide vaccination clinics. DACC, the Department of Economic Opportunity and the Department of Human Resources were also directed to report back with plans to increase hiring and training of veterinary staff.
