Homeless numbers rose slightly in LA County and city of Los Angeles, says the 2022 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count.
The number of homeless people in Los Angeles County has climbed to 69,144, a 4.1% increase over two years ago, according to data released Thursday by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority tallied from a February point-in-time count.
People collect their belongings at a homeless encampment in Toriumi Plaza at 1st Street and Judge John Aiso Street in Los Angeles Thursday, March 17, 2022. The encampment has been fenced off and people living there have been asked to leave. The plaza is being closed for maintenance and repairs according to officials. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority is providing shelter and services for those displaced by the closure.
“The numbers are suggesting that there has been a flattening of the curve,” said Kristina Dixon, interim co-executive director for LAHSA. The increase, and the high percentage of people on the streets, has concerned many who say the report is promising, but the crisis is not properly managed. LAHSA is concerned that as COVID-19 relief money and eviction prohibitions disappear, the next count could show a greater increase.
Also, the agency reported 39% of people experiencing homelessness reported suffering from a serious mental illness or substance abuse. Fifth District Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger believes those numbers are much higher — closer to 50%. He praised Project Roomkey, which began shortly after the pandemic and shifted 10,500 individuals from the streets into vacant motel and hotel rooms. Of those, 40% were placed into permanent housing, according to the LAHSA report.
