Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez expresses her unwavering commitment to protecting immigrant families, even at the cost of potential federal funding cuts. She argues that the city's immigrant communities are integral to its fabric and that safeguarding them is paramount.

During an interview with KQED on Friday, Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez responded to a question on how much pain the city should be willing to take if the Trump administration cuts federal funding to the city over its sanctuary status. Hernandez stated that considering how much illegal immigrants are of the fabric of the city of Los Angeles , they have to do whatever they can to keep their families whole.

She added that they can be innovative with their budget and find different ways to reassess where they're spending their dollars to put them into more effective places because they cannot afford not to protect these people. Hernandez explained that if they were to lose a substantial number of their immigrant communities, whole economies would break down in the city of Los Angeles. KQED host Saul Gonzalez asked Hernandez how much pain she thinks the city should endure to make sure the undocumented are protected in Los Angeles if the Trump administration tries to take retribution against the city by cutting federal funds. Hernandez responded that considering how much they are of the fabric of the city of Los Angeles, and how many of their families are of mixed immigrant status, they have to do whatever they can to keep families whole. She believes there are other ways for them to bring in resources and they're going to have to be more strategic and go to the drawing board as issues and crises come up. Gonzalez then asked Hernandez what she would say if the Trump administration withheld federal funds for things like a rail extension, mass transit project, or housing program. Hernandez responded that to keep families together, she does believe it's worth the cost. She stated that they have places to find resources to lean on and they cannot afford to continue to separate families
