The announcement comes days after LAAS' general manager Staycee Dains resigned without warning.
The City Controller's Office will conduct a performance audit of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services in an attempt to identify solutions to years-long issues, officials announced Wednesday. The audit is expected to determine whether the city is providing its animals with humane care; whether programs maximize the department's ability to save animals; and whether sites have capacity to manage the current demand.
Annette Ramirez, who led LAAS on an interim basis for a year and half prior to Dains' appointment in 2023, again began leading the department in September.Dains addressed issues related to volunteers during her tenure but still faced overcrowding and other challenges at the department's six shelters, most of which had plagued the department long before her arrival.
