In his first interview in more than six months, Kyrie Irving explains why he decided to re-sign with the Mavericks. He also says team management consulted him...

“I think what I learned most about myself is just staying patient through the everyday hustle and bustle. You know, just trying to pick up my kids, my wife and transition to a whole new city and just get acclimated with the team.

“Obviously it’s a long season; we want to peak at the right time. The training staff here is really smart, really experienced Question: You grew up in New Jersey. When you were 9 years old, Jason Kidd got traded to New Jersey Nets, and he became one of your favorite players. Could 9-year-old Kyrie envision this day, that one day you’d be playing for Jason Kidd?“No, I don’t I don’t think I could have ever imagined it this way. And this is beautiful, honestly, because I could reflect on his journey and say I was that 9-year-old kid looking up at J-Kidd leading the New Jersey Nets to those Finals.

Question: How are you, physically, entering the season? Along those same lines, how are you approaching this unique training camp with this international travel and a lot of trips over the next 12 days?“Physically I’m great, taking my time into this training camp. It’s my 13th season, so I’ve been through a few training camps.“My approach this year is to focus on being prepared and healthy and peaking at the right time.

Question: You streamed early on when Luka was playing friendlies, watching his film. What did you see while he was playing with Slovenia, how he was utilized in some different ways like off the ball and some actions at the corner like zoom-actions . . . What did you see from that that you could be like look looking forward to with him coming back to the Mavericks?“Luka already makes the game look easier here in the States, but when he plays with Slovenia it’s like he goes Super Saiyan mode.
