'California heavy' band talk about metal catharsis and meeting their heavy music heroes.
“It kind of used to be this stigma about people listened to heavy music that they were angrier—and ‘Why is he screaming?’ and ‘Why is that guy yelling?'” bassist Nick Schendzielos tells SPIN backstage at Louder Than Life, referencing a study he read about the subject. “They found actually that people who listen to heavy metal, as a whole, are more well-adjusted as a result because it acts as a pressure release for those emotions to be channeled.
The KYNG musicians grew up obsessed with the likes of Metallica, Pantera, and Black Sabbath. And through making their own music, they’ve been able to meet—and receive direct, vital encouragement from—some of those metal icons. “ Rex Brown from Pantera,” says singer-guitarist Veliz. “We got to play with Phil Anselmo, Megadeth and Dave Mustaine. “We’ve gotten to tour with these guys and gotten feedback from them. … We’ve been lucky enough to actually get a response from our musical heroes who influenced us left and right.”

Ariana Grande's R.E.M. Beauty to Host Pop-Up Event at Ulta BeautyR.E.M. Beauty, the cosmetics line created by Ariana Grande, will host a pop-up event at Ulta Beauty at the Alpha Parkway Plaza on March 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The pop-up is called Hypernova Hotel, and although the “Yes, And?” singer won’t be present, her presence will be felt. R.E.M. Beauty is a direct extension of Grande’s brand, with products like the Sweetener Concealer and the Thank, U Next Plumping Lip Gloss taking their names from two of her albums. The marketing and packaging for Grande’s products also reflect a space-age aesthetic seen in several of her music videos, such “Break Free” and “34+35.” If past iterations of this event are to be believed, Hypernova Hotel’s Dallas pop-up will surely expand on that. Launching in promotion of both R.E.M. Beauty’s new Hypernova product line and (presumably) Grande’s science fiction-inspired new record, this event’s previous outings in Paris and Santa Monica have boasted glossy, girly and retrofuturistic decor.
