” Lucille Clifton loved Black people so, so, so deeply. I love us, too, and I have greater language for all the ways I do because of her. I first read Philip Larkin in a college course on post-1930s poetry. He has a funny little poem called “Party Politics” that I reference in the book’s lyric essay, which is called “Public Policy.
” With regard to how many refills a guest at a fancy dinner party might get offered, he writes: “It seems to turn on where you are. Or who. ”E. and I met last year at the Cave Canem retreat, where they brought a poem to workshop that led me toward writing the poem “Anarchic Ode,” which I wrote while watching a pair of pigeons walk around in a bus station.
I loved how they both were traversing this place of procedure and orderliness with no regard for human concerns like the stanchions around them. E. The final poem in my book imagines an encounter between its speaker and Shakur at a farmer’s market in Havana, Cuba.
