Kyle Busch avoids last-lap wreck, wins Talladega.
NASCAR rules dictate that every race must under green at the start of the final lap. NASCAR rules on the high-banked tracks at Daytona, Talladega, and Atlanta also dictate that teams use tapered spacers that drastically reduce horsepower and create drafting packs. As a direct result, any late caution in a Cup Series race at a pack racing track means the field must finish at least one full lap without bringing out another caution for the race to end.
The cycle of late cautions began with a bump draft gone wrong between Joey Logano and Corey LaJoie on the far outside lane. At the time of that yellow, Busch was running seventh. On the first overtime restart, Busch moved to fourth after a crash between Noah Gragson and Ross Chastain in a race for second also collected Kyle Larson in a spin that would lead to a violent hit back in the pack.
When a car on the inside line ran out of gas coming to the green, Busch was able to pull into the lead. That lasted just a few short seconds, with Bubba Wallace and helper Ryan Blaney passing Busch coming to the white flag to begin the final lap. This content is imported from Twitter.
