The White House special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has said the Russian and Ukrainian leaders could meet in person.

Kyiv's mayor paused for 13 seconds when asked in a televised interview whether U.S. President Donald Trump was a reliable ally for Ukraine ahead of renewed peace negotiations tentatively planned for the next few weeks.

Vitali Klitschko said it was vital for the U.S. to be in Ukraine's corner and supporting the country's interests in a new round of peace talks with Russia. But when asked by Sky News anchor Trevor Phillips on Saturday whether he trusted the U.S. president, Klitschko—a former boxing heavyweight champion and a major figure in Ukrainian politics—hesitated and briefly laughed. Klitschko said he tried to trust the U.S. leader, but often did not understand messages issued by the president on the long-running peace process. Negotiations on a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, pushed by the U.S., have been slow despite repeated pledges from the Trump administration that a deal could be agreed quickly. The last round of talks, which rounded off earlier this week, ended without a breakthrough, although expectations for the discussions had been low. Ukrainian and European officials have watched on with some concern at Trump's apparent reluctance to strong-arm Russia into budging on its demands in any peace settlement. Kyiv has tried hard to keep Trump on side, despite several high-profile spats and diplomatic incidents. Ukraine accused Russia of hindering the"difficult" talks in Switzerland on Tuesday and Wednesday, where no answer emerged on how a deal could resolve the difficult issue of who would control of parts of eastern Ukraine. Tuesday will mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of its neighbor. Fighting has continued in the background of peace talks, and Moscow currently controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory after years of only small gains on the front lines.Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said the U.S. hoped a fresh round of peace talks could take place in the next three weeks and floated the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine has long called for a presidential summit between the two leaders, which Russia has ruled out. Trump could join a meeting between the presidents, Witkoff added in an interview with Fox News, aired on Saturday. Klitschko said early on Sunday Russia had targeted the Ukrainian capital overnight, while regional authorities separately said a 49-year-old man had been killed southwest of the city. Fifteen people were injured, including four children, officials said. Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of the Kyiv regional military administration, said on Sunday that Russia had carried out a"massive missile and drone attack" targeting critical infrastructure. Zelensky said Russia had also targeted six other regions. "Moscow continues to invest in strikes more than in diplomacy," the Ukrainian leader said, calling for more air-defense supplies from Kyiv's supporters. Russia's Defense Ministry said on Sunday that it had homed in on Ukrainian military industrial sites and energy facilities overnight with long-range precision weapons. Moscow said it had struck all intended targets., ours is different: The Courageous Center—it's not"both sides," it's sharp, challenging and alive with ideas. We follow facts, not factions.
