🔴 Kwasi Kwarteng set to deliver conference speech after making U-turn over 45p tax rate cut
Taking to the podium just after 4pm, the Chancellor will deliver a hurriedly-rewritten speech explaining the reversal, after embargoed extracts of his planned address released yesterday insisted that “we must stay the course”.
In a statement posted at 7.30am this morning, Mr Kwarteng said the proposed tax reduction for those earning more than £150,000 was “simply a distraction on what was a good set of policies and a strong package”. Mr Kwarteng and Ms Truss are understood to have held crisis talks last night after it became clear that outrage over the tax cut plans would have dominated the Tory party conference.
