It’ll never be Candlestick, but it’s time for the South Bay stadium to develop some lore.
SANTA CLARA — The 49ers have played in Levi’s Stadium for nine years, and so far, it’s just another Silicon Valley corporate campus.It’s pretty simple: You need big moments, the kind that can be recalled in vivid detail years later, the kind that compel people to say they were there even when they weren’t.
Sure, a Super Bowl was played there, but do you remember the score, or even the teams involved? Levi’s has hosted a multitude of sporting events from Wrestlemania to a College Football championship game to a National Hockey League match. But did any of them stir the soul of the 49ers’ faithful? There were indelible moments that only require a few words — a simple, perhaps corny, phrase — to evoke vivid memories for 49ers fans.
“We had a big deal today just going back and showing our players the history of the Niners,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We started with the ‘82 game, ‘The Catch.’ Then I showed them the ‘92 game, the ‘93 game, the ‘94 game — just to see all that history, so everyone kind of has an idea of what Dallas and the Niners mean to people.
The Niners won six of eight home games in 2019, and made a late push last season — four-straight wins at Levi’s to reach the postseason. But it wasn’t until this season that you could say the Niners became truly inhospitable hosts to opposing teams.
