Kroger , the nation's largest grocery chain, announced on Monday the resignation of its Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen following an internal investigation into his personal conduct. The investigation, conducted by an outside independent counsel, found McMullen's actions to be inconsistent with Kroger 's business ethics policy, though the company emphasized that the matter was unrelated to the business's financial performance, operations, or reporting.

McMullen's departure comes after Kroger's board was made aware of the situation on February 21st. \Board member Ronald Sargent will assume the roles of chairman and interim CEO effective immediately. Sargent, a veteran of Kroger with a long history at the company, has served on the board since 2006 and as lead director since 2017. His experience spans various roles within Kroger, including store operations, sales, marketing, manufacturing, and strategy. Prior to his time at Kroger, Sargent served as Chairman and CEO of Staples. \McMullen, 64, began his Kroger journey in 1978 as a part-time stock clerk and bagger in Lexington, Kentucky. Over the years, he steadily ascended through the ranks, becoming chief financial officer in 1995 and chief operating officer in 2009. In 2014, he was appointed CEO, and a year later, he was named chairman. Kroger stated that it will initiate a search for a permanent CEO, with Sargent committed to serving as interim CEO until a suitable candidate is identified and appointed
