During her confirmation hearing, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem faced scrutiny on border security, the CBP One app, past controversies, and her potential impact as Secretary of Homeland Security.
Kristi Noem , the Republican governor of South Dakota, faced a barrage of questions during her confirmation hearing for the position of Secretary of Homeland Security . Noem, whose background includes farming and serving as a representative for South Dakota, appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
During her testimony, Noem asserted that the southern border is currently insecure but expressed confidence that it would be secured soon under the leadership of President-elect Donald Trump. She stated, 'The southern border is not secure today. But in just three days, we will have a new president in this country, President Donald J Trump, and he will secure our border.' Noem further pledged to shut down the CBP One app upon confirmation if given the opportunity. This app has been utilized by some migrants in recent years to facilitate screening processes, schedule appointments, and present their asylum claims after entering the country. 'Yes, Senator, if confirmed and I have the opportunity to be Secretary, on day one, CBP One will be shut down,' Noem declared. 'There's data and information in there that we will preserve so that we can ensure we know who's coming into this country and who's already here that we need to go find.'Noem's emergence onto the national stage was marked by her handling of the pandemic. She gained significant attention for her decision to keep businesses and schools open in South Dakota, a stance that contrasted with many other states. She even hosted a Fourth of July fireworks display at Mount Rushmore. 'We didn't mandate anything,' Noem stated during the Republican National Convention last July. 'We never ordered a single business or church to close. I never even defined what an essential business was, because I don't believe that the government has the authority to tell you that your business isn't essential.' Her time as governor was also characterized by other notable actions, such as sending National Guardsmen to the southern border in support of the Texas National Guard. In her last state budget address, Noem highlighted progress in the state's economy, education, and public safety. If confirmed, border security would be a primary concern for Noem, as it would encompass Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under her purview at the Department of Homeland Security. 'I have increased resources to combat the horror of human trafficking,' she said in December. 'And when President Trump secures the southern border, we'll cut off the primary pipeline for human trafficking into our country.' In an interview shortly after President-elect Trump's victory, Noem emphasized that border security would be her 'No.1 priority.' 'We've got to secure our country, and we've got to get the murderers and terrorists and rapists out of this country, and make America safe again. That's really what his goal is. And I'm just so proud of him that he's working so hard at it immediately,' she said. Noem's potential role as Secretary of Homeland Security comes after a period of controversies earlier this year. She faced scrutiny and a lawsuit over her social media endorsement of dental work she received from a Texas practice. Additionally, she was criticized for writing in her memoir about shooting and killing her 14-month-old dog 'Cricket', claiming it displayed an 'aggressive personality'. This led to her acknowledging 'errors' in her book, including a false claim that she had met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Despite these controversies, President Trump defended Noem last year, stating that he likes her 'a lot'
