Even Tiger Woods can’t compete with the eye-popping bonuses being collected by LIV players like Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson, who finished tied for second at Augusta and both have made more than $80 million over the last year, according to Forbes estimates.
Brooks Koepka of the United States and Jon Rahm of Spain look on from the sixth green during the final round of the 2023 Masters Tournament.Brooks Koepka entered Sunday’s final round at the Masters with a two-stroke lead, and a prime opportunity to deliver a signature win to LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed series he joined in June. Instead, with a three-over-par 75, he dropped to second on the leaderboard.
Koepka, no stranger to Masters heartbreak after a runner-up finish in 2019, picked up a $1.6 million check from the 2023 edition. That is a relative pittance compared with the $81 millionestimates he has pulled in over the past 12 months, before taxes and agents’ fees. Mickelson, meanwhile, was thewith $138 million, and Reed isn’t hurting, either, ranking ninth on that list with $37 million.
Since making its competitive debut last summer, LIV has fought vigorously to establish itself as a viable competitor to the PGA Tour, and spending has been its most compelling strategy. In August, that the $620 billion Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia planned to spend at least $2.4 billion on LIV through 2026. That included an estimated $370 million in upfront payments to the seven golfers on the highest-paid list.
