Five years ago, the world lost baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri, and their daughter Alyssa; NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi; Payton Chester and her mother, Sarah; educator and basketball coach Christina Mauser, and pilot Ara Zobayan.
No matter what Los Angeles has endured, the City of Angels has always been resilient. As thousands of families continue the arduous rebuilding process following the recent wildfires, Sunday marks five years since Angelenos lost one of their most celebrated sports heroes, Kobe Bryant .
During his 27-year career as a baseball coach, he won four state championships and inspired hundreds of athletes at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Some of the players he coached went on to play in the major leagues, including Brandon Brennan, who has pitched for the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. "He’s probably my favorite head coach I’ve ever had," Brennan said shortly after Coach Altobelli’s passing.
She is survived by her father, Chris, and brothers Hayden and Riley. Todd Schmidt, former principal at Harbor View Elementary School, a school Payton previously attended, remembers the Chester family as "engaged, supportive, encouraging, and full of mischief and laughter."Schmidt also gave Payton’s parents kudos on social media for having "the best kiddos.
