SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Knuckles secretly revealed a key change for Shadow's backstory ahead of his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, revealing how his appearance in the film may be different from the video game series. The Knuckles TV show ended with the red Echidna defeating the Buyer alongside Wade.
In his debut game Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow was a creation of Gerald Robotnik, Eggman's grandfather, who tried using the hedgehog to cure his granddaughter Maria of a fatal illness. However, the Project was forcefully shuttered by G.U.N., who invaded the ARK, imprisoning Gerald and killing Maria. However, Maria managed to get Shadow to Earth in an escape pod, where he was later captured himself.
Given how iconic the ARK is, though, it seems unlikely Sonic the Hedgehog 3's plot won't include such a major part of Shadow's backstory from the games. Instead, it's more likely the Ultimate Lifeform traversed Earth at some point, either before or after the Space Colony was seized by the government. Since Knuckles doesn't provide any concrete information about this 1974 alien, there's no way of knowing what point of Shadow's backstory this information connects to.
