A misleading image showing 'poor service delivery' in Cape Town has been found to have been generated by AI.
Service delivery is a hot-button issue in South Africa ahead of the 2024 General Elections, and potholes are a big part of that conversation. The city suffers from power outages, an unreliable water supply and a growing number of potholes. This tends to contrast withCape Town has fewer blackouts, better roads and has been investing in forward-looking solutions to address the energy crisis.
An image was shared recently showing a derelict and pothole-ridden road leading to Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain. But a quick fact check by AFP found the photograph was fake and merely an image generated by AI.Some users in the comments section on the Facebook post also pointed out that it would be impossible to capture Table Mountain from that angle, as the photographer would have to be in the Atlantic Ocean.
