KnivesOut writer/director Rian Johnson reveals that he didn’t originally imagine Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc: 'I wrote the character in a vacuum.'
Knives Out writer and director Rian Johnson reveals that he didn't originally envision Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc when he was writing the script. Released in 2019, Knives Out puts a new spin on the classic Agatha Christie murder mystery story formula, following Craig's Southern detective as he investigates the murder of the patriarch of an eccentric family. The film was a hit with audiences and critics, performing well at the box office and earning very positive reviews.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Although it's now hard to imagine any other actor taking on the role of Blanc in Knives Out, Johnson reveals in a recent interview with Queue that he actually didn't envision the actor in the part when he was writing it.
"Oh God, no. I wrote the character in a vacuum. Basically, when I started writing the Benoit Blanc character, I screwed myself up because I started thinking that I wanted to create a Poirot or a Sherlock Holmes, so I started loading him up with all these quirks, and he just became ridiculous. Finally, I said, I’m not going to try and create a character on the page beyond what his actions are in the mystery. So the only thing I gave him was, I think I called it a “light Southern drawl.
In both Knives Out movies, Craig's Blanc is operating on a level entirely separate from that of the other characters, serving as more of a mysterious observer in the first film and a much more active participant in the second. Craig is able to capture both Blanc's highly intellectual interior life, which often puts him at odds with those around him, and the character's somewhat flamboyant exterior, especially in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
After the success of the first Knives Out, Netflix secured the rights to two sequels for a whopping $250 million. It's not clear what Johnson has planned for the third film, but the most recent sequel suggests that Craig's detective will again play a central role in a new mystery with new suspects and supporting characters.
