After waiting three extra weeks, dog teams were zooming out of Knik Lake.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Once wondering if the conditions would allow it this year, Knik 200 race officials were met with the welcome sight and sound of sled dog teams Saturday morning. Seventeen teams left from Knik Lake starting at 11 a.

m., kicking off the two-day race three weeks after it was originally set to start on January 3. “We’re just happy that we have a field of mushers that want to come race in Knik,” Knik Iditarod Trailblazers President Brian Hanson said. “We know we’ve got other dog races going on this weekend, and we’re just excited to have folks here in Knik running on the historic Iditarod trail.” Announced on the races social media page in December, the 2026 Knik 200 was originally postponed due to poor trail conditions, thanks in part to a lack of snow fall at the time in the area.“They got the trail in and they’re making it happen, so the dogs are ready and we’re excited,” Knik 200 musher and 2023 Iditarod Rookie of the Year Eddie Burke Jr. said.
