In a first look at July's Knight Terrors: Angel Breaker, Sandman's John Dee becomes integral to a DC Universe ruled by nightmares.
Sandman's sickest villain, Doctor Destiny, will soon have a horrifying new legacy, thanks to DC's forthcoming Knight Terrors event. Destiny played a brief but unforgettable role in The Sandman's first comic arc, controlling the patrons of a diner in a grisly and horrifying montage. Now, with the DC Universe plunged into darkness as a result of Knight Terrors, Doctor Destiny's ghastly powers are back in play, and they're being hunted.
This July, DC will release the two-issue miniseries Knight Terrors: Angel Breaker, written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Acky Bright. A member of the League of Shadows known as Angel Breaker is searching for a special device - one that allows the user to tap into Doctor Destiny’s dream powers. Unfortunately, said device is locked away in a KOBRA safehouse, forcing Angel Breaker to call on the services of Raptor, a professional thief and former ally of Nightwing.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Knight Terrors Sees Angel Breaker Hunting John Dee's Powers 6 Images Close Deep in an abandoned Kobra safe house is a device able to access the dream powers of John Dee, a.k.a. Doctor Destiny. As heroes across the world succumb to nightmares, Angel Breaker wants it. Now, to infiltrate a hall of horrors, she’ll need the help of a professional thief—the man known as Raptor. But Angel Breaker and Raptor aren’t exactly friends.
Although Doctor Destiny, AKA John Dee, is best associated with The Sandman, he actually began life in the Silver Age of Comics, in 1961’s Justice League of America #5. Initially, the dream-based technology that Destiny became known for was not present - this did not come about until a later appearance, when he invented the "Materioptikon," which allowed him to control dreams. Later, during Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, it was revealed this device was powered by Morpheus’ Dream Stone.
Destiny used the Materioptkon to dig into the dark subconscious horror of the human condition, and now Angel Breaker wants that same power, amplified a thousand-fold by the world of nightmares DC is about to become. Tragically, it seems that The Sandman's darkest villain isn't done unleashing suffering on others, even from beyond the grave.
