'” And Hudson Valley resident Jonathan Powers said he thought the Knicks had “zero chance” of mounting a comeback and decided it was time for shuteye. “I haven’t missed a minute except for literally this. This is the only minute of the series that I’ve missed,” the married father of two said.
The team marched back from an almost 30-point deficit, shocking the Spurs thanks to an OG Anunoby’s tip-in with only seconds to spare to lock up the 107-106 win. By then it was past 11:30 p.m. The Big Apple was bursting at the seams as midnight approached following the improbable end, but some fans were already dreaming of better fortune for the Knicks in Game 5.
Knicks fan and New York native Rich Stein said he went to bed with the game appearing to be well out of reach – but when he woke up around 1 a.m. and checked the score on his phone, he could hardly contain himself.
“I was in the room, my wife was next to me on the bed and my baby girl was only a couple feet away from me in her crib and it took every single second of restraint, every single ounce of restraint to not jump out of bed and scream,” the 34-year-old Connecticut resident said. He then scrolled through social media for the next two hours to retroactively soak up the incredible moment.
Powers, a LeBron James fan who has also always followed the Knicks, saw the score the next morning and raced to the TV to watch highlights on SportsCenter.
“I like the Knicks, and it’s been very exciting to watch them. I regret it completely,” he said.
“To be honest, I thought I was making a good choice, but it doesn’t feel like a good choice today. ” Gabriele Maltinti – stock.adobe.com Passaro found out about the major victory – and how she missed out – after her husband, Nick, came home and woke her up to break the news.
“I was so, so sad. Because that was such a cool way to win that — Brunson went for the three-point shot. Missed it. But then tipped it in … I cannot believe I missed that,” the 33-year-old said.
All three fans said they’ll be burning the midnight oil when the Knicks take on the Spurs with a chance to clinch the championship series Saturday night – though a superstitious Stein sticks by his early bedtime.
