Designed by architect Greg Truen, director at SAOTA ; international garden designer Franchesca Watson and Cape Town-based interior design studio OKHA, KLOOF 119A features natural rock and stone and geometric angles:
The brief was clear: ‘Create a house that made the most of the mountain site and the views that surround the house while obscuring the busy street and the surrounding houses from the view.
Truen has lived in the residence for about a year now. ‘The spaces are simple use-zones articulated by level changes in the floor and ceilings. There are gardens on every level which extend into the view creating the impression that the building sits in the mountain landscape,’ he says. ‘The inverted pyramid roof allows for views of the peaks of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain and allows one to track the movement of the sun and moon across the sky.
Sheltering the house from the busy street is a traditional Cape stone wall. A large metal front door opens into a small lobby linked to a courtyard garden., an international garden designer, led the landscaping of the project. Her elegant work is known across Southern Africa, North America and the Seychelles.
Each floor features its own gardens and courtyard, which extend from the mountain surface down along the house – providing privacy from neighbouring buildings while still allowing light into otherwise dark and isolated spaces. The top level of the house takes centre stage with the most impressive views. The open-plan kitchen, the dining room and the lounge are all located here, while the family’s work and bedroom spaces are on the mid-level. The garage, gym, cinema and guest room can be found on the lower level., a Cape Town-based interior design studio.Sample superb spirits with tequila tasting for two at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront for R325.
