AUSTIN — As Jelani Watkins was charging down the track toward the finish line with the weight of a state championship in his yellow baton, he kept his composure and executed. Not only did Watkins finish the race, but his final leg of the 4x400 relay helped Klein Forest win gold with a time of 3 minutes, 11.69 seconds. Lawson Jacobs, A’Isayha Brown and Terrence Morris ran strong in the first three legs of the race.
The Golden Eagles started the running events with a bang, winning the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.01. That team was comprised of Parker Jenkins, Watkins, Ahmir Robinson and Jaden Galloway. Smith described Galloway, a senior, as “the engine” of the team. The same group of girls followed that up with another standout performance, colleting gold in the 4x200 relay at 1:35.37.For the second consecutive year, Strake Jesuit senior Jace Posey finished out his season battling the record book, not other competitors.
After getting started with the event at 10 a.m., Posey and other athletes were delayed two and a half hours due to lightning. When he returned to the track, he was able to maintain his focus and accomplish his goal. She excluded herself from that label and took care of business in the girls shot put, earning the gold with a toss of 45 feet, 6 ¾ inches. Kimble hit that mark on her final attempt of the day.
