Kinks have become so popular that 'vanilla sex' no longer seems so dull

There’s a weird new consensus that if you’re having generic sex, you’re having bad sex. And that’s just not true

And while the idea of my friend resignedly tooling up to get the job done was very funny, I do worry about those people who were always happy with generic sex before and who seem to now feel obliged to do all sorts of outlandish things as a result of a kind of sexual inflation.

Time and time again I hear women saying that their sexual partners want to bring complicated bells and whistles into the bedroom, not because either of them really wants to, but because there’s a weird new consensus that if you’re having generic sex, you’re having bad sex. And that’s just not true. I don’t want to return to a time where sex is stigmatised. But it’s a real mistake to disregard generic sex, even if bells and whistles are all the rage right now. But even if you’re inclined towards more – ahem – niche activities, you can’t deny that generic, vanilla sex is the white linen shirt of shagging. A true classic and, executed properly, it can be the best item in your wardrobe. Just try not to think about Donald Trump while you’re doing it.
