The future of King County’s youth jail hangs on a critical vote set for Tuesday afternoon that could hold political implications for several county council members. The King County Council is expected to take up a motion sponsored by Councilmember Reagan Dunn to continue operating the, which showed the county is still moving toward a switch to alternative forms of unsecured detention for juveniles who commit violent and serious felonies. However, this comes during a surge in the number of juvenile violent felonies. In 2023, crimes that include murder, assault, rape, shootings, and burglaries showed a combined increase of 57% over the previous year.
Now the uncertainty surrounding the future of the CCFJC has impacted morale, leading to staffing shortages, higher overtime costs and fewer services for the youth being held. Tuesday’s vote will ask council members to choose between keeping the youth jail open or adopting a policy where young offenders are housed in unsecured respite homes spread throughout King County. The details on how that will look remain vague.
