With two more months left in the year, the total number of deaths for 2023 stands at 1,010 people. In all of 2022, 1,001 people died from overdoses.
Fentanyl overdoses have been the cause of most of the deaths in 2023 and in 2022, according to the dashboard, which was last updated Wednesday.The number of overdose deaths involving fentanyl have increased over the past several years. According to the King County Medical Examiner's Office, there were 109 deadly fentanyl overdoses in 2019, 168 in 2020 and 385 in 2021.
“I tried to calibrate a two-prong approach," Harrell said at the time. "One is we were not afraid to arrest people; we need to focus our arrest strategy. On the other hand, we have to refocus our tool to help people who are dying because of this deadly drug." In a statement after the vote, Harrell said passing the ordinance was a “needed step forward in our efforts to address the deadly epidemic of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs.”
