Following the fatal stabbing of a Metro bus driver, the King County Council will host a special meeting to discuss transit safety and explore potential solutions.

The King County Council will hold a special meeting Monday to address transit safety concerns and explore potential solutions with a panel of regional leaders from transit, health, and public safety. The meeting, organized by Councilmember Claudia Balducci, follows the fatal stabbing of Metro bus driver Shawn Yim last month.

Panelists will include representatives from Amalgamated Transit Union Local 587, King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall, Metro General Manager Michelle Allison, Department of Community and Human Services Director Kelly Rider, and Sound Transit Deputy CEO and Chief Service Delivery Officer Russ Arnold. The meeting aims to provide insights into safety issues and risks, assess current safety improvement efforts, and explore ways to enhance safety for both transit operators and passengers in the near and long term. Discussions will center on current experiences with transit safety, best practices at the local, regional, and national levels, and potential improvements to existing protocols. The meeting will also address lessons learned from the recent tragedy to help guide future safety enhancements. The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13
