A poll reveals significant British public opposition to King Charles III's planned visit to the United States, citing concerns about the King being used to bolster President Donald Trump's image amidst global tensions and controversies.

Britain’s King Charles, right, and U.S. President Donald Trump speak at a State Banquet in Windsor Castle, England, on day one of U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s second state visit to the UK, Wednesday Sept.

17, 2025. Ahead of a report Tuesday that Charles III will speak to a joint session of Congress during his highly anticipated visit to the United States in April, an influential British newspaper has publishedn which a majority of respondents saying they oppose the trip, with many citing concerns about the king being used to flatter the “ego” of an “unstable” and “narcissistic” President Donald Trump.who responded to the question, “Do you think King Charles’ state visit to USA should go ahead?” Among those responding to the readers’ poll, a number said they they did not want their monarch providing a royal photo op to a controversial president who has launched an increasingly unpopular war against Iran, blasted NATO allies, insulted U.K. troops who fought in Afghanistan and threatened the sovereignty of Canada, or which the king is head of state. In all, 58% of respondents said Charles should not visit the United States “at this time”; 31% said he should go. Another 12% said Charles should do the trip, but only after the war in the Middle East is over, with some expressing concern for his safety amid so much global uncertainty. Britain’s King Charles III, centre left, and U.S. President Donald Trump, centre right, pose with Queen Camilla and First Lady Melania Trump, right, at the state banquet at Windsor Castle, England, on day one of the president’s second state visit to the UK, Wednesday Sept. 17, 2025. Katherine Heigl defends attendance at Mar-a-Lago animal rescue event “Trump just wants to use the king,” said a reader from the U.K. in the comments. “He likes having his face splashed across the newspapers and shaking hands with the king gets him positive headlines, which he craves. But that’s all he sees the king as being useful for.” Another British reader expressed concerns that Trump could put Charles “in an embarrassing/humiliating situation during a speech at a banquet or in the Oval Office,” and a third said, “I think it should be made very clear to Trump that he is persona non grata.” “The king absolutely cannot go to the USA,” a fourth British reader. “For the same reason he can’t be photographed with his own brother because of allegations over wrongdoings.” This reader was referring to the recent arrest of the former Prince Andrew on allegations of “misconduct in public office.” Andrew, like Trump, has faced questions about his friendship and professional dealings with the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. But this reader, and a few others, went further in opposing the visit by expressing the view that Trump’s administration has become autocratic and that air strikes launched by the United States against Iran make him a “war criminal.” For that reason, this reader said, seeing Charles with Trump could be akin to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor visiting Hitler in 1937. But another reader blasted such a comparison as “ignorant,” though that person also said, “I’m not a fan of Trump either.”that Charles’ first state visit to the United States as king would include an address to Congress, Buckingham Palace has not formally announced any details of the trip, leading some royal commentators to question whether it will go forward amid so much controversy surrounding the war and Trump himself. The trip originally was planned to also commemorate America’s 250 years since independence. Newsweek’s royal correspondent Jack Royston, including Liberal Democratic MP Ed Davey, said the trip should be canceled. Like some Daily Mail readers, Davey accused Trump ofand objected to the way Trump has lashed out at Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to allow British bases to be used for air strikes against Iran. “Keir Starmer should advise the king that the state visit to the U.S. scheduled for April should be called off,” Davey said. Indeed, as Davey indicated, the prime minister and U.K. government call the shots on when the king or other members of the royal family are deployed for diplomatic purposes. It remains to be seen whether it would be politically risky for Charles to be seen, which is why this Daily Mail poll could be a useful indicator of public sentiment. The Daily Mail is one of one of the highest-selling daily newspapers in the U.K., and its website is one of the most visited English-language news sites in the world. Traditionally, the Daily Mail provides positive coverage about the monarchy and sides with conservative politicians, including Trump. LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 03: Prince Andrew, Duke of York smiles with US President Donald Trump and Dean of Westminster John Hall during the visit to Westminster Abbey on June 03, 2019 in London, England. President Trump's three-day state visit will include lunch with the Queen, and a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace, as well as business meetings with the Prime Minister and the Duke of York, before travelling to Portsmouth to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. But the royal family’s favorability ratings have taken a hit from the ongoing revelations about Andrew’s friendship with Epstein, following the U.S. Department of Justice’s release of the Epstein files. Only 37% of Britons believe that abolishing the monarchy would be worse for the country, down from 47% in November, and fewer than half of Britons have a positive view of Charles,Both Andrew and Trump appear in the Epstein files numerous times. The documents on Andrew detail his alleged misconduct, including sharing of confidential government information as a U.K. trade envoy. Charles also faces growing questions about whether he turned a blind eye to his brother’s alleged misconduct or, the American woman who was trafficked by Epstein as a teenager and who accused Andrew of forcing her to have sex with him in 2001. In recent weeks, royal experts, including some at the Daily Mail, have expressed support for the king’s visit because Trump is known to be an admirer of the British royal family, especially of the late Queen Elizabeth II. For that reason, they say the king would be uniquely suited to wield the “soft power” needed to smooth over tensions between the two countries. “Charles and Trump are friends and it won’t hurt to have them touch base again, especially after the way things have gone with Starmer,” a British respondent to the Daily Mail poll said. “America and the U.K. have always been friends. Let’s not ruin that because of one man.” British and American readers who appear to support Trump wrote that the king should be honored to visit the U.S. president, who has shown “great leadership.” Others pointed out that state visits are usually planned months in advance. If Charles were to pull out before the visit, it could hurt U.K.-U.S. relations. A British reader who is clearly not a fan of Trump’s said his “ego” would be hurt if Charles suddenly canceled. “He would thrown another tantrum,” the reader said. Some American Daily Mail readers were not happy about the trip. “This should never happen, simply because of his attitude towards the UK in recent months, he has attacked our democracy, our military and yet he still gets the highest profile visit, to help with his polling figures across the USA!!” one said. Another added: “I believe the King shouldn’t because it would sully him and Trump would use the occasion to do or say something disparaging about the UK not supporting his stupid and dangerous war in Iran.” And still another American brought up Charles’ estrangement from his son, Prince Harry, who is living in California with his wife, Meghan Markle, and two children. “The king is coming to America to have a state visit with our president but can’t visit his son,” the person said. “Stay home king we don’t need you here.”Site of notorious Oakland In-N-Out gets another chanceDear Abby: I spurned my dear friend because my insurance company told me to.
