The monarch unveiled a commemorative plaque as he met with community representatives, local councillors and those involved in the bridge design and construction.

The King has officially opened a new bridge in Aberdeenshire in honour of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles III attended the Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge during a visit to Royal Deeside today.

The new structure, which cost £3.8 million, replaces a nearby 271-year-old Category-A listed bridge which was deemed no longer suitable, Aberdeen Live reports. Provost of Aberdeenshire Cllr Judy Whyte said: “We were honoured to have His Majesty The King join us today to formally open the new Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge.

"This new crossing will take the strain of traffic away from the original Gairnshiel Bridge and will enable walkers and cyclists to continue to enjoy a journey over this historic structure for many years to come.”
