King Charles II death is being re-examined in the series Royal Autopsy, which explores the 'horrendous treatments he was subjected to by physicians who were so desperate to keep him alive.
In the days leading up to the death of the monarch in 1685, his physicians were so desperate to keep him alive that they subjected him to treatments that included draining his blood to even burning his head. His condition quickly deteriorated and within four days he was dead.
Centuries after they were buried, the autopsies of the long dead monarchs are carried out in unique ways, using prosthetic bodies to piece together how they died. ‘We have all of that carefully recorded, so it was like looking at very detailed patient notes. It was extraordinary.’Mark Wingett plays King Charles II in the dramatic reconstructions
Traditionally considered one of the most popular English kings, Charles acquired the informal title of the Merry Monarch, a reference to the liveliness, and hedonism of his court. After dissolving the English Parliament four years before he died, Charles ruled the country alone, which may also explain part of why his physicians were so desperate to not let him die.
