A rock garden has been established in response to the Highland Park July 4 parade mass shooting with the goal of creating “warm, happy feelings for people, and to feel kindness from somebody else,” according to one of the people behind its development.
With 2,325 decorated rocks, the Kindness Rock Garden is a permanent, interactive attraction, according to Jill Rivkin, director of community outreach for the Deerfield-based nonprofit organization, Gratitude Generation , which created the garden.
The teen board is hosting bake sales this month in Northbrook, Deerfield and Highland Park to raise money for local food pantries.Far right, Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering is among people participating in the placement of rocks in a gesture to dedicate and launch the rock garden. “This is Deerfield. This is Highland Park. These are folks from throughout Lake County who have come together as a community to celebrate love and kindness within Lake County,” the mayor said.Children move around the new rock garden, placing new decorated rocks and moving others. Neukirch, who attended the Kindness Rock Garden opening, said the city is communicating with next of kin, injured victims and the artist associated with the installation about the pop-up art memorial decision.
