Triathlete, coach and mentor Mark Brandt wants kids to take competitive spirit, health and perseverance to heart with adulthood approaching. His Kids That Tri initiative has students in grades 6-12 believing in themselves in all kinds of ways.
Triathlete, coach and mentor Mark Brandt“Rock Roll Run” coming up on August 18, is a nonprofit helping inner-city youth gain athletic skills and improve their health through triathlon training. Brandt, a Lakewood YMCA board member, founded the program as a supportive, nurturing and developmental environment for them.
This “thing” has roots in Brandt’s lived experience. He had done a couple of triathlons earlier in life, copping to being “a terrible swimmer” when he was younger.“So, I certainly knew what hard work and what running was about and I loved biking, but I was never a bike racer. But then I started and ended up getting asked to join the board of Velosano 11 years ago and did the 200-mile cancer fundraising bike ride.
The training transcends building athletic abilities; it’s meant to foster confidence, resilience, unity and a sense of community and belonging among the budding triathletes-in-training. Kids That Tri partners with the USA Triathlon Foundation, receiving support from various community donors for equipment including swim goggles and caps, running shoes, bike helmets and bikes. These resources help ensure that youth athletes can fully participate in training and competition.
