As US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in escorted Kim Jong Un back over the border to North Korea, Kim said, “The fact that we will be able to meet each other anytime now, I think this is the signal this meeting will send.”
Peace on the Korean Peninsula is a "personal issue" for Moon, says CNN Seoul bureau chief
The steps taken today were symbolic for South Korea -- and personally significant for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, said CNN Seoul Bureau Chief Paula Hancocks. The Trump-Kim meeting could indicate a sign of progress toward North Korean denuclearization, Hancocks said -- and ultimately, peace on the Korean Peninsula, and the formal end of the Korean War.
"It is largely symbolic in some ways, but it is an important step for South Koreans. For President Moon Jae-in, he's been very clear about this. His most important task is to make sure there's not a second Korean War. His parents are North Korean refugees or were North Korean refugees. He was part of the family reunions.
