Has it brought your songwriting to a more personal place? I’m thinking of the track “Cookie Butter,” for instance, which feels kind of like a mini-memoir.because it can relate to a person or the audience. But that was sort of about [] a relationship. And just, you know, miscommunication. And then wanting to obliterate it all with sound, basically.for “Sketch Artist” is terrifying. Tell me about the filmmaker Loretta Fahrenholz and how you got connected to her.
We had mutual friends, and she shows at Reena Spaulings Fine Art, this gallery in New York where I’ve showed. She makes really cool films and we always wanted to collaborate. So, she came here to L.A. from Berlin and we shot that over three nights. I guess it was my idea to be an Uber driver. And it was her idea to have these, like, [Listening to your new record, I wondered about your relationship to nostalgia.
Yeah, I’m kind of wary of nostalgia. I mean, there are certain things about New York I definitely miss. But at the same time, it was hard to live there in the ’80s. When I went to see the Beastie Boys do their recent talk,, which was of course clever and everything, my favorite part was all the old footage they had of themselves. It didn’t make me sad, but it was very touching and emotional for me. I think we met them when they were like 15.
Sonic Youth went through phases where there were certain songs we hadn’t played in so long that were sort of fun to rediscover. I remember after we redid, that it was interesting to play live because that album was so much harder than all the music that came after it. It wasintense to play, and it was like, Wow, this really was something. And I do listen to certain records . . . not like Billie Holiday or Joni Mitchell—not music I listened to as a teenager. That would be sort of sad to me.
