As periods of extreme heat become more common, the peril to human health will escalate.to reduce their risk of harm. Many also open heat shelters for those in need.
Low-income rural communities face a different set of challenges. Few have robust social services or sufficient funds to open a heat shelter. Pride may deter older residents from calling for help before they are too ill to do so.
