Killing diversity hiring programs in Texas colleges could hurt push for more engineers
on college campuses, convinced it is giving some students and faculty an advantage over others based on their skin color and/or their political views.

Texas would be mistaken to shut it." Texas A&M is already producing more engineering graduates than any school in Texas. But even with 8,000 to 9,000 graduates a year from the school, the whole state university system has to do more, Sharp said.
He is convinced that even without DEI programs, the University of Texas and other schools can provide statewide recruitment programs that help get more people interested in engineering.Creighton said the millions of dollars being spent on DEI at the University of Texas can be redirected to recruitment programs that include everyone no matter where they live in Texas or nationwide.
Carson, like many other conservatives, said DEI is encouraging colleges to recruit and hire faculty based on skin color instead of merit. The makeup of faculty at the two flagship universities shows few Black and Hispanic members in comparison to the state’s demographics.
