Books and film heralded an Alfred Hitchcock-worthy invasion, but the 1990 arrival of Africanized bees, thankfully, didn't live up to the hype.

Africanized honey bees owe their existence to a scientific experiment gone awry nearly 70 years ago in Brazil. “The Swarm” and other films like it fed into fears of genetic and biological manipulation, “something that some felt imperils mankind and threatens the environment,” said Jamie Starling, an associate professor of history at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. “There was just an overall anxiety of how science is manipulated and how that manipulation might have unintended consequences.
Because their hives are often found in the ground, hollow trees, trash cans, barbecue pits and other places, they are likely stumbled upon by domestic animals and people who work outdoors. In 2007, Manuel Trevino, a 91-year-old South Texas man, was stung by an estimated 1,000 Africanized honey bees at his ranch. It took doctors at Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline 12 days to remove all of the stingers, treat his eyes, and supervise dialysis after bee venom shut down his kidneys. He survived.
