Vera Anderson's brutal murder in Warrington had all the hallmarks of a hitman
On August 25, 1991, the body of Vera Anderson was discovered in the driver's seat of her car in an old works yard in Penketh, near Warrington in Cheshire. Her brutal murder had all the hallmarks of a hitman - her throat had been cut, and a piece of her hair had been ripped from her scalp, possibly, detectives believe, as proof the job had been done.
It was obvious from the start how Vera had been killed - yet to this day, the reason as to why her life was taken, remains a mystery. It’s a case that has had some of Cheshire Police’s most experienced investigators stumped for over three decades, and one they refuse to give up trying to solve.Manchester Evening News' chief reporter Neal Keeling has covered countless murders during his 40-plus year career - including that of Vera Anderson. In common with the many officers that have worked on the killing over the years, it is one that has stuck with him.
As part of a recent re-appeal for information by cold case detectives, Neal spoke with current and former Cheshire Police officers, as well as the victim's daughter, who told him the killer had 'got away with this for far too long'. In this 15-minute Youtube documentary, he talks us through what happened on that August Bank Holiday weekend, as well the investigation, potential leads and latest updates. In Neal's own words, he believes detectives are "tantalisingly close' to making a breakthrough.
