Lava began bubbling Monday through the crust of Kilauea volcano, one of the world's most active volcanoes, in a remote and closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The eruption was confined to the volcano's summit caldera and was preceded by increased earthquake activity.

The area where the eruption is occurring has been closed to the public since 2007 due to hazards that include crater wall instability, ground cracking and rockfalls. A third endangered whale has been spotted entangled in fishing gear off the East Coast, marking an alarming end to the year for a species threatened with extinction.
