An Uber driver claims the actor attacked him, threatened to kill him and caused multiple injuries, leading to a civil lawsuit that cites assault, battery and emotional distress.
Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland is facing a civil lawsuit filed by Uber driver Rafael Manvelyan who alleges a violent confrontation in Los Angeles in early January.
According to the complaint, the 59 year old actor entered the rideshare vehicle near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue while visibly intoxicated and quickly became hostile when he could not understand the driver, whose native languages are Russian and Armenian. Manvelyan says Sutherland began shouting, using profanity and physically assaulting him, striking his head, face, neck and upper body with closed fists.
The driver further claims the actor placed him in a chokehold and repeatedly threatened to kill him as he fled the car, yelling the threat while pursuing him on the sidewalk. Manvelyan states that dash‑camera footage captured part of the incident and that several eyewitnesses observed the attack. Police arrived minutes later, noted bruising and swelling on the driver's forehead, and detained Sutherland on suspicion of criminal threats.
He was booked at the Hollywood division of the Los Angeles Police Department in the early hours of January 12 and released later that morning on a fifty thousand dollar bond. The lawsuit lists assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence as causes of action, seeking compensation for physical injuries to the head, face, neck, cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, right shoulder, as well as nervous system damage and psychological trauma.
The complaint also highlights Sutherland's prior legal troubles, noting a 2007 guilty plea to driving under the influence that resulted in a short jail term, and a 2009 arrest for assault after a confrontation with fashion designer Jack McCollough that was later dismissed following a public apology. The actor's legal team has not responded to requests for comment, and his representatives have declined to release the dash‑camera video, citing the privacy of the private citizen involved.
Manvelyan's attorney Mitra Sabouri emphasized that the driver is not seeking publicity, but simply wishes to obtain legal redress for the injuries he alleges were caused by the actor's aggressive behavior. Los Angeles detectives from the Hollywood Division continue to investigate the incident, although an official police statement indicated that the driver did not require medical treatment at the scene.
The case adds to a pattern of high‑profile celebrity confrontations that raise public questions about accountability and the handling of alleged assaults involving well‑known figures. If the civil suit proceeds, it could result in a significant financial judgment against Sutherland and may influence both his personal reputation and professional engagements moving forward
