A TikTok challenge highlighted the vulnerability of some Kia cars to theft without a key, prompting insurers to react. Now, affected vehicle owners can file a claim as part of a class action lawsuit. The issue stemmed from certain 2015-2021 Kia models lacking standard anti-theft electronic immobilizers. Owners, manufacturers, and state Attorneys General urged the automaker to take action.
Kia responded with a software upgrade for vehicles sold without immobilizers, research showing a theft rate reduction of over 50%. However, for owners of impacted models, the theft risk wasn't their only concern. Some insurers refused full coverage in certain states, offering only liability coverage. Existing full coverage policies were often kept, but at a higher cost. After a lengthy legal process, a federal district court in California approved a $145 million settlement between Kia and consumers claiming defective vehicles susceptible to damage and theft. The settlement includes millions for impacted drivers, with reimbursement ranging from $250 to up to 60% of the car's black book value. Affected owners can submit claims now, needing documentation like proof of ownership, prior reimbursements, and evidence of qualifying theft, attempted theft, total loss, qualifying loss, or purchase/installation of an anti-theft system
